No more music services (except Open Source Music Services)
2012 for me is an Open Source year. This is the year I wean myself of all my crutches. There’s no reason not to. Linux is desktop ready. I code open source in a federated collective where that is expected (not just the norm).
So it’s time to start looking at what I can cut back on. The first on my list is the OS. Ubuntu or gNewSense is my natural first choice. Problem solved. The second on my list is music.I just canceled my Spotify and Rdio subscription. That’s a good step. now I need a replacement.
I like the idea of federation. I’m looking for a federated source of music that I can in turn help add to. These sources would have to provide their base code as open. Barring that I would be open to music services that simply are open source. If all else fails I will have to try and start something won’t I? At least I can encourage those in my immediate circle to try such a project.
And the other part of note is that I want to only support artist willing to put their music out there for free or donation funded. On top of that they must license under the creative commons or some such clause that allows share alike access. If they want to post the actual studio source of their tracks I would be even more pleased (thanks NiN for doing so)!
So that’s that. Let the revolution begin! All the tools are in place. Ciao!
